Napa Valley Itinerary for First-Timers

If you're planning a trip to Napa Valley, California, get ready for gorgeous vineyards, incredible wine tastings, amazing food, and some seriously unique experiences. From riding a gondola to a hilltop winery to spending the day aboard the famous Napa Valley Wine Train, there's so much more to do here than just hopping from one tasting room to another.

We visited Napa Valley in October, right around harvest season, and the weather was absolutely perfect. The vineyards were lush, the scenery was beautiful, and it was such a great time of year to visit California Wine Country.

Here are the best wineries, unique experiences, restaurants, and tips to add to your Napa Valley itinerary.

Best Wineries and Experiences in Napa Valley

  • Napa Valley Wine Train: If you're visiting Napa Valley for the first time, this is one experience I HIGHLY recommend. We booked the six-hour Legacy Experience, which takes you through wine country aboard a beautifully restored vintage train, complete with a four-course meal, wine tastings, and stops at two wineries. You'll even stop at the iconic Napa Valley Welcome Sign for photos and a wine tasting in the open-air observation car. Between the scenery, multiple courses of food, desserts, and not having to worry about driving, it's such a fun way to spend an entire day exploring Napa Valley. Plus you get to enjoy a dance party on the way back to the station.

  • Castello di Amorosa: If you've ever wanted to drink wine inside a medieval Italian castle without actually going to Italy, add this winery to your Napa Valley bucket list. Located in Calistoga, Castello di Amorosa is a massive Tuscan-inspired castle with stone towers, courtyards, underground cellars, and wine tasting experiences. Make sure to reserve your tasting or castle tour ahead of time because this isn't somewhere you can just casually show up and wander around.

  • Charles Krug Winery: This historic winery in St. Helena was one of the stops included in our Napa Valley Wine Train experience. Established in 1861, Charles Krug is known as Napa Valley's oldest winery and is a great place to learn more about the region's winemaking history. We enjoyed a guided wine tasting, and the beautiful Redwood Cellar makes the experience feel even more special.

  • V. Sattui Winery: Our second winery stop on the Napa Valley Wine Train was V. Sattui, another historic estate in St. Helena. The grounds are gorgeous, and it's also known for its marketplace filled with cheeses, charcuterie, sandwiches, and other gourmet foods. If you're visiting on your own instead of with the Wine Train, this is a great winery to build a picnic-style afternoon around. Just know that outside food isn't allowed, so plan to purchase your picnic items onsite.

  • Sterling Vineyards: This is easily one of the most unique wineries in Napa Valley because it's the only winery in the world with an aerial gondola! Located in Calistoga, you'll ride a gondola up the hillside to the winery while enjoying incredible panoramic views of the vineyards below. We booked the Hilltop Experience, which included a seated tasting of five wines paired with cheese and charcuterie. I highly recommend booking this experience in advance, especially if you want the more elevated tasting rather than a self-guided tour. The gondola ride is included with the tasting reservation, so you don't need to purchase a separate ticket.

  • Napa Valley Small Group Winery Tour: If you'd rather explore smaller wineries and meet other travelers, a small-group wine tour is another great option. Many include transportation, visits to multiple wineries, and sometimes lunch. Some tours also offer photo opportunities at the famous Napa Valley Welcome Sign, so check the exact itinerary before booking if that's a priority. I'll link a tour option here as well.

Where to Eat and Drink in Napa Valley

  • Bistro Don Giovanni: If you're craving Italian food in Napa Valley, definitely add Bistro Don Giovanni to your list. This restaurant is known for its delicious pastas, wood-fired pizzas, and beautiful garden-style setting. It's a great place for lunch or dinner, and I'd recommend making a reservation in advance, especially on weekends.

  • RH Restaurant at RH Yountville: This is hands down one of the prettiest restaurants in Napa Valley. The dining room is filled with beautiful olive trees, fountains, and sparkling chandeliers, making the atmosphere feel incredibly romantic and upscale. I'd highly recommend booking dinner here so you can experience the restaurant all lit up at night. It's definitely worth making a reservation ahead of time.

  • Clementine Yountville: This super cute restaurant in Yountville is perfect if you want somewhere stylish but still relaxed. The decor is adorable, with a beautiful indoor-outdoor setting, and the menu features Mediterranean-inspired dishes, brunch options, and cocktails. It's a great spot for a leisurely brunch, lunch, dinner, or even just an Aperol Spritz while exploring Yountville.

When Is the Best Time to Visit Napa Valley?

We visited in October, and I honestly think it's one of the best times to experience Napa Valley. Fall is harvest season, so the vineyards are still full of life, the scenery is beautiful, and the weather can be perfect for spending your days outside.

  • August-October: This is generally Napa Valley's harvest season, making it an exciting time to visit as wineries are busy picking grapes and making wine. October is especially beautiful as the vineyards begin transitioning into their fall colors.

  • Spring: Another beautiful time to visit Napa Valley, with green hillsides, blooming wildflowers, and generally fewer crowds than the busiest harvest weekends.

  • Summer: Great for long days, outdoor tastings, and vineyard views, but temperatures can get pretty hot, especially in places like Calistoga.

Napa Valley Travel Tips

  • Book your restaurants & tastings in advance: Many Napa Valley restaurants and wineries require reservations, especially for specialty experiences like Sterling's Hilltop Experience or Castello di Amorosa's castle tours. Don't assume you can just show up and get a tasting.

  • Don't plan too many wineries in one day: Between driving, tastings, photos, and actually enjoying the properties, I'd recommend planning around two or three winery visits per day max unless you're booking an organized tour.

  • Plan transportation ahead of time: Napa Valley wineries are spread out, so booking a wine tour, private driver, or an experience like the Wine Train is a great way to visit multiple wineries without worrying about driving after tastings.

  • Give the Wine Train its own day: The Legacy Experience takes about six hours, so I wouldn't try to squeeze another winery tasting into the same day. Enjoy the train, then plan a nice dinner afterward if you're still hungry.

  • Explore different towns: Napa Valley isn't just one town. Places like Napa, Yountville, St. Helena, and Calistoga all have different restaurants, wineries, and experiences. Try to group your reservations by area to avoid unnecessary driving.

Napa Valley is one of those destinations that's perfect for a romantic weekend getaway, girls' trip, or bucket list wine country vacation. Whether you're drinking wine inside a castle, riding a gondola over the vineyards, or enjoying a multi-course meal aboard the Napa Valley Wine Train, there are so many unique ways to experience it.
