Visiting Petra, Jordan: A First-Timer’s Complete Guide

Petra is one of those places that completely lives up to the hype. Carved directly into rose-colored sandstone cliffs, this ancient city in southern Jordan is a bucket-list destination for a reason. If you’re planning a trip and want to make the most of your time, here’s everything you need to know before visiting Petra.

A Quick History of Petra

Petra was once the thriving capital of the Nabataean Kingdom and later became part of the Roman Empire. When trade routes shifted, the city was slowly abandoned and eventually forgotten by the Western world until it was rediscovered in 1812. Today, Petra is one of the New Seven Wonders of the World and one of the most important archaeological sites on the planet.

How Much Time You Need

Plan to spend at least one full day in Petra. It took us about seven hours just to see the main highlights, and even then we didn’t see everything. Arrive right when the gates open to beat both the crowds and the desert heat. Earlier is always better here.

Tickets and Entrance Tips

The easiest way to visit Petra is by purchasing the Jordan Pass, which includes your entrance ticket. You can hire a guide if you want deeper historical context, but only book guides through the official ticket office at the entrance to avoid scams.

The Treasury: What to Know Before You Go

The Treasury is Petra’s most iconic sight and it’s about a 40-minute walk from the entrance through the Siq. Once you arrive, there are a few important things to know:

  • With your back facing the Treasury, look to the left side of the Siq for a popular photo angle tucked around the corner

  • There’s a short uphill hike nearby that offers a view from above

  • There is a government fee for this hike, and tips are often expected if guides help with photos

It’s busy here, so patience goes a long way.

Hiking to the Monastery

From the Treasury, it’s roughly a 2.5-mile walk to the Monastery. Along the way, you’ll pass the Royal Tombs, the Colonnaded Street, and the Amphitheater. The final stretch involves about 800 steep steps and can take 45 to 60 minutes, but the panoramic views at the top are absolutely worth the effort.

Petra by Night Experience

Petra by Night is one of the most unique ways to see the Treasury. It’s held only on select nights, so you’ll need to check dates and times in advance.

  • Tickets are limited and must be purchased onsite

  • Tickets are not included in the Jordan Pass

  • The experience includes after-hours access, tea, and a candlelit light show

Arrive early if you want a spot, as tickets sell out quickly.

Where to Stay

Staying close to the entrance makes a huge difference. Mövenpick Resort Petra is located directly across the street from the main gate, making it incredibly convenient for early mornings and Petra by Night.

Practical Tips for Visiting Petra

  • Wear comfortable hiking shoes since you’ll be walking for hours

  • Bring cash for tips at photo viewpoints and small fees along the way

  • Avoid riding donkeys or animals through the site

  • Carry water and sun protection, even in cooler months

Petra is massive, historic, and unforgettable. Planning ahead makes all the difference when it comes to enjoying the experience without feeling rushed or overwhelmed. Whether you’re visiting for one day or returning for a second round, it’s a place that truly stays with you.
